To me that is no longer personal use even if it is not for commercial use.
Get in touch with the font author and fully disclose how you are going to use the font. In my case, I consider that you are acting in bad faith if you hide in generalities how you would actually use the font.

i Click on the name of the member that appears in font listings, comments on a font or messages posted on the forum. The click will bring you to that member's profile.
Example when I click on your name, it brings me to
https://www.dafont.com/profile.php?user=1101556
If you see a
Send a private message button, click on that button to send that member a message. That member will be notified by email of a new message in his PM inbox.
Sometimes an email address is also shown on a member's profile page. If there's one, then you can use that also.
Remember that there is no guarantee that the message will reach the intended recipient. It depends entirely on whether the member is still logging in to his/her Dafont account and/or she/he has not abandoned the email address he/she is using here at Dafont. However, if the member is active on the forum, it is very likely that he/she will read your message.

How to get in touch with the font author? Go to the font author's profile page and see if an email is shown there. If there's one, send the font author an email. Also, if there's a "Send a private message" button there, you could also get in touch with the author through that site feature. Do you still have the font zip file that you downloaded? There might be a text file or some other file that might have information on how to get in touch with the author.
As for the $15 donation, I believe that amount is reasonable. The fee to use the font for commercial purposes varies and depends on the author. If that's my font, i would have asked you to pay few dollars more.
If you are not sure if the amount quoted is from the author then you should really get in touch with the author first. Also if you see a "Donate to author" button below the download button, click on that link. The link will bring you to the author's PayPal account registered here at Dafont and enter $15 for the amount.
Can you uninstall the font again then restart Windows. Then install the font again and see what happens.
The font is good so the problem is in your PC. The triangle (or even a rectangle) with a question mark is not present in the font so that is probably a substitution from one of Windows' or the program's default fonts.
BTW what program were you using the font in. Is the problem also present when used in other programs?

I also would like to know for sure. Is it free or is is not?
It is *not* a free font. It is a trial font, a demonstration font. You download the font, install it and use it to see if it is the font that fits your needs. If it happens that is not the font that you wanted, you are expected to uninstall the font. However, if the font is perfect for your project, you should acquire a license to use the font. The font you downloaded should have instructions on how to acquire a license to use the font.
