I think it's from Ghostscript Nimbus Sans L Bold.

You can get a decent version of it called TeX Gyre Heros from the LaTeX font archive.
http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/texgyreheros/

It may be Postscript only on that site, but you can get OTF from FontSquirrel.

If you're looking for a fully commercial solution try URW++ Nimbus Sans Bold

"Something Similar" would be any Helvetica clone.

Suggested font: TeX Gyre Heros Bold

Did you find what you needed?

These aren't as whimsey, but they are similar:

Gruenewald

http://www.peter-wiegel.de/Gruenewald.html

which includes a webfont, or

Helvetia

http://www.peter-wiegel.de/Helvetia.html

or Morado

http://www.peter-wiegel.de/Morado.html

Your sample just reminded me of a cross between Lucida Handwriting and some of Peter Wiegel's fonts. Peter Wiegel accepts donations but does not require them.

"Trotzdem sind diese Schriftarten hier sowohl für private Zwecke als auch für den kommerziellen Einsatz kostenfrei nutzbar." on his main Fonts page http://www.peter-wiegel.de/Fonts/index.html means you can use them for commercial use.

Try DS Type Maga (not free)

https://www.fontspring.com/fonts/ds-type/maga

Some Free options: Serif Beta
(This one's a great font)

http://betatype.com/node/35

or Permian

https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/permian-serif

Or.... like GSM suggests, just browse dafont and google fonts using his links and see if there's something there you can use.

Dec 21, 2016 at 14:04  [initial post]  Similar is OK. Main title font.

I just love it. May not be digitized. 1932 Charles Scribner's if that helps.

Main title and author might be different typeface, look at lower case t, but I think they are different fonts in the same typeface.

Hey, Don,

I looked for embedded fonts in that sample, too.

But when you found no width vectors that made me think: "Maybe it's an AutoCAD font."

It is called NewPlex.

Based on the Run-Of-The-Mill Simplex.

You can get most AutoDesk fonts by installing a demo of AutoCAD, though licensing will be tricky if using for commercial purposes without buying product.

http://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/free-trial

[EDIT Dagnabbit, took another look, the 3 is not correct for it to be NewPlex. I'm still sure it's a standard CAD font, based on Hershey Vectors, see http://paulbourke.net/dataformats/hershey/ which has the correct 3.]

Suggested font: NewPlex

This is standard lettering for phenolic labels, used everywhere for industrial applications.

Some codes (IFSC, etc.) specify "Arial or similar font (Non-Bold)." (This font is not Arial.)

It is the font called "Normal" in this sample:

It might be here (Downloaded OTF and TTF didn't work on my system, invalid header, might work on yours,
I didn't want to spend time dorking with it to make it work on mine.)

After looking at 3400 handwriting font samples (Thanks, JerseyG! :-) ) the closest I could find is Macopah.
It's similar, not exact.
