Font creation services for hire?

 1

So, I'm a graphic designer and I've recently started to create fonts (my first 2 were just accepted here at dafont). I quickly found that while I love creating the glyphs, I don't really like actually doing the technical work in FontLab to put the fonts together so that they have nice ligatures, kerning, etc. - and the accent characters.

Just wondering if any of you font creators that lurk in these forums offer services such as taking a custom font (from an Illustrator file) and bringing it to a final "professional" font file. What would that cost?

Please reply here - or feel free to send me a private message.

Thanks!

Hi! Welcome (& i love your wiskey town, btw)
To answer your question, i don't know how much this kind of work could be charged but I assume it won't be cheap... As making a working font with googd kerning and all pro stuff is 70% of a font job. The design is one thing, making a fully exploitable font is clearly another.

Hi vinz, and thanks for the response (and compliment).

Yeah - I don't assume that it would be a cheap service and I know (after attempting myself) that its a very technical and not necessarily fun or fast process. I just assume that there are people out there who do this sort of thing for a fee - just as I get hired as a graphic designer. Usually stuff like this would be by the hour, I would assume as each job/font would require different amounts of work? I guess I'm just trying to get a feel for what the rates would be for this kind of service. It won't be the worst thing in the world if I have to keep doing it myself, but I really find myself loathing it.

What does the design look like? Can you show something?

My first two fonts are here: http://www.dafont.com/tom-kolter.d2874

So, those are both fonts that I would been interested in paying someone to "assemble" them.

Also, here's the new one that I've been working on: http://www.ghostsofbigfoot.com/images/Gentle_Computer.gif

Whiskey Town and Honest Merchant were difficult for me and I'm still not happy with the final font file. Kerning might be easy for me to do with the newest one since there's no real serifs to deal with.

Gentle Computer is that geometric that it is easy to make the font file. Hardly any kerning, except for the 'j' and fixed bearings - again except for the 'j'. All it lacks are the missing characters and the stand-alone accents.
Whiskey Town is not my kind of type. But that is a matter of taste. Proper kerning for that one will be time consuming, each and every letter pair has to be looked at. I don't think I want to do that.
Honest Merchant is my kind of type and deserves good kerning. Also time consuming, but far less than Whiskey Town. If you don't mind I'll have a look at this one this weekend.

OK, on the Honest Merchant, the design is worth some work. Well, some ... Many characters are still missing and the font as is needs some serious cleaning to make it a [more] professional font. One example, the bottom of the 'w', but it is almost every letter. And, did you ever run a validation check? Many redundant points and Off-curve extreme coordinates. On the kerning, I see you have already put a lot of work in that. But it does not seem to be consistent, why 'Le' -36 and 'Lo' -12? And why a pair for 'Do' and not for 'De'?

I have a font that I designed in Illustrator and would like to hire someone to make it into a usable font file. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Thanks

Hello,

I currently have a font in illustrator, ready to go, but I cannot afford to purchase the soft wear to transform it into a professional font.
I am looking to hire someone who can generate the font for me.

Thank you for your help!

it's not about generating a font, it's about making a font.
it will cost you way more than buying the software and learn how to use it.

Some Font creator softwares are free.
And some others cost less than $100.

Hi,

Thank you for responding to my post so quickly. The font creator service I found do not allow me to use an illustrator file already in existence, instead I have to use their design tools. Do you know of a free Font creator that does allow it?

If anyone has any links they want to share in order to point in the right direction I would really appreciate it. All the free creators I found aren't what I am looking for.

If anyone has the program, FontLab, and is willing to help me out for pay, please message me.

Cheers.

With FontForge import Illustrator SVG ( save as SVG Basic 1.1).
