Decorative Fonts Clipped in Word. Should I use CorelDraw?

Mar 08, 2016 at 04:12

So far every font that I’ve purchased from MyFonts.com has not worked in Word 2016. It will look perfect in the document but if I print or send to PDF file, the fonts will be chopped off at the top or bottom, sometimes the sides. I do not want to purchase Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop because of their subscription pricing. Assuming there is no way to correct this problem in Word, I’m wondering if using CorelDraw might be a better idea? Can anyone confirm success using CorelDraw with style sets, swashes and ligatures? I would like to know before I invest in the program. Samples are below. This happens to be the "Indenture English Penman" font.

Have you tried contacting MyFonts directly? They have a customer service as far as I know.

+1
Dafont is not the customer service of Myfonts.

So here we are only allowed to discuss fonts created at Dafont? Is that correct?

No, it's just that if you bought something on MyFonts, the first thing to do is to contact their customer service if something went wrong with your order.

The problem I'm running into is that many font authors or companies do not test their fonts in Word and so when I contact them, they do not have any information for me. So if we put aside the exact font and where it came from, my general question is, "Can anyone confirm success using CorelDraw with style sets, swashes and ligatures?". I would really like to know a good program for the future and I wonder what other people are using successfully.

It's a commercial font, so people here won't probably have it, so they won't be able to test it. You have more chances of finding a solution by asking MyFonts.

You can try Adobe products if you're looking for something good for every kind of need.

It's because you don't know how to work with Word.

Okay. You guys were right. I should have contacted MyFont first. They were very kind with their response. I will post it here, in case someone happens upon my question in the future and perhaps the information can help someone else out there. I will have to test it later, when I get home...

"Applications such as MSWord is one of the very few applications
out there that force the leading (or line spacing) override of the
ascenders and descenders on screen. The problem can usually be fixed
by highlighting the text and choosing Format > Paragraph, then
changing the line spacing to 1.5 or 2 lines instead of single.

Something else you can try in Microsoft Word:
- Select the string of text with the clipped characters.
- Choose 'Paragraph' from the Format menu.
- In the Indents and Spacing window, enter 3 in the 'Before' box of the Spacing section.

One of these options should solve the problem. If it doesn't, please let us know and we'll dig a little deeper."

That is a Windows problem (except Adobe apps) and a problem of Microsoft apps on a Mac. The problem is often only exhibited in OTFs. If the font also comes in TTF, that one will likely work just fine.

The bottom line is the font was only tested on a Mac or Adobe apps and not on Windows (non-Adobe programs.) It is simple to fix in a font editor but it is best that the concerned font author/foundry will do the fixing.

Try to change line spacing in Word (the option given to you by fonts) and see if it will work. If not, vertical metrics settings of the font has to be adjusted and that has to be done by the font author/foundry.

All true. And yes ... a commercial font should (shall) be tested not only on Adobe applications but also on MS Office. But as Toto said, it is an easy (one-click) fix to get the Win acsender and descender right.

Yes, it's looking that way. I tried all the suggestions for adjusting the line spacing but that just made the text vanish from the screen or get worse. LOL The metrics settings probably do need adjusting as you say. I will see if MyFont is willing to do the work, as I'm ignorant of such things and also it would benefit future customers. Perhaps they could also send me a TTF to try. In the time being, I'm getting a copy of CorelDraw by the end of the week and will test the font in that application. The only other app I have is Adobe Photoshop Elements and that unfortunately does not include access to glyphs or special characters. Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it!
