Separate bold subtype into a separate font file?

Sep 21, 2011 at 08:31

I was wondering if it was possible to separate the bold version of a font into a different ttf file? I know Segoe has several different versions for each (bold, italic, semibold, etc) and I was wondering if there was a way to do that with a different font.

Thanks.

Why would you need to do that? Also Segoe bold is grouped in with the other weights too.

Because this software I'm using doesn't give me the bold/italic/heavy options, so I need an already bolded version to use.

You would have to make a Multiple Master as was usual before Open Type.

Took a lot of tweaking, but looks like I got it figured out. Thanks.

Segoe is not Public Domain. You can't modify it without the permission of the author.

True Menhir, but the maker/owner of Segoe should have made the bold and italic faces available for applications that are not Open Type aware, which is the fast majority of all text aware applications.

Is in fact very easy to do. A tool like TransType wil convert the OTF flavors to different TTF fonts.

It actually wasn't Segoe, since that one already had the different faces available so I used it as an example. It was a different font that I had gotten ages ago.
