Yes. And apart from that the capability to search a forum like this and then the most difficult art of all, the capability to read and absorb what has been written a million times over.

no, write letters on a paper, and wait.
If you want to try making fonts without downloading any software, go to FontStruct at
http://fontstruct.fontshop.com. This is a free web site where you can construct fonts on a grid using various geometric shapes. Since it opened about two and a half years ago, some amazing work has been created there by amateur and professional designers from all over the world. You'll find plenty of help, including a tutorial. In addition, many members of the FontStruct community are happy to answer your questions and offer advice on how to improve your fonts. You can choose whether to share your designs or keep them private. Either way, you'll have your own high-quality truetype fonts that can be used in any application.
To see some examples of very different FontStruct creations here at dafont.com, take a look at the work of these designers:
1. funk_king
2. Tobias Sommer
3. Ray Meadows
4. fontcollector (me)
By the way, I don't receive any compensation for promoting FontStruct. I just think it's a wonderful resource and a great place to start learning how to make fonts. But be careful, because it's completely addictive!
