Problems with viewing fonts in Windows Explorer preview

Mar 10, 2019 at 01:06

Hi guys, so I have a problem using my Windows 7 and it's with the preview of fonts.

Somehow, when I click on a font to see the "Abc" (written with the current font) preview on the bottom of the window, it messes up switching it. It changes to symbols, sometimes greek letters, sometimes japanese, whatever.

So... what should I do to fix it? By fixing it I mean seeing the actual letters with the font, not freaking symbols.

To show it better to you I'll leave a link with a printscreen of this

I help someone can help me. It's realing boring dealing with that.

Thanks a lot, buh-bye

It appears that you are not using the Windows font viewer, FontView. What program are you using. Or on what program were you doing what you are describing?

Hello, toto@k22
I'm using the Windows Explorer preview. To see the font before I open it (using the folder preview) with the default Windows font software.

Now I see what you mean and, unfortunately, have no answers for you.

Just like the fonts in one folder. I don't understand why Windows could not render a preview of some of the fonts. Maybe someone here have an answer.

There was a program that was posted at ABF before that shows previews of all fonts in the Windows Explorer folder that you open. I just test run it and dropped it since it crashed my Windows XP when I open a folder containing big fonts. Since Windows 7 is more crash resistant compared to Windows XP, you might want to give this free program a try. The original site is gone but you can still download the program from the Wayback Machine

Yes, toto@k22, it's exactly like this picture.
I tried this "Fontnail" but it's just a DLL and it doesn't work here. I have the same problem.
I'll try looking for a software to show me the previews, while I wait for an answer for this problem.
Anyway, thanks a lot for trying to help me.

Isn't it just a setting within the font file itself? I think this has already been discussed at some point in the past but I can't find the thread I'm thinking about at the moment. Either way, if you just double click on the font file, you will see the preview.

@gabrielconnor what you download from the link I provided is fontnail.msi which is the Windows installer for Fontnail. If you still have the file you downloaded, right click on fontnail.msi and choose install. From then on, folders with fonts that you open in Windows installer will have a preview instead of the regular thumbnails. See previews and info at the Wayback Marchine page again.

Settings in the font file result in the specific previews. Not much you can do about it, unless you want to manually change those settings through a font editor.

As toto suggested it is best to use a font manager. A free one will do; MainType free edition for example:

Guys, just thanking each one of you who helped me. I hope someday I can preview correctly. Anyway, I can deal with it using the managers.

WINDOWS 10 FONTS
Can someone please inform me how I can adjust the font for non-latin alphabets on windows 10? I'm an English and Japanese speaker and I just built a windows PC recently as a switch from apple. The Japanese Font used in web browsers looks absolutely horrendous. When I was running bootcamp on my Mac, I recall using a font called Meiryo, but is there a way to install this on Windows 10? Or is there another option? Every tutorial or help I find ends up being too out of date or just for "language packs" which is unnecessary.
