How do I get the test to show the line extensions on the ends of the words?

You can use __(underscore2)letters
Example __a or a__ (underscore 2x)

Or You can access all those alternate characters by using Opentype or Glyph program such as Adobe Illustrator cs,Adobe Photosop cc, Adobe InDesign, etc.

In Ms Word 2010 and above please enable ligature then use __letters__
Example:
__a beginning swsh
a__ ending swsh

use underscore 2x
