Hi, I've created a font using Adobe Illustrator. This is the first I have created. I'm just wondering what software to use to convert it to a font file. I'm assuming I would need to save each letter individually and import them into another software, as Illustrator cannot create the required file type, is this correct? And what software would I need?
I'm very sorry if this has already been answered in the forum, it was just easier this way.
Thank you in advance.
- Melissa.
you need a font creation software such as Fontlab, Fontcreator, ... A list is available in the Software section:
http://www.dafont.com/soft.php#3
For fontlab, create a new document in Illustrator size of an A4 in portrait.
Put each caracter on a layer and resize them to fit the size of the document.
Then open Fontlab, create a new font, Copy an paste each caracter from illustrator to fontlab.
This is the easy step, next you'll need to learn how to use Fontlab to get a working font (Learn how to kern font, Set ascender or descender, ...) there is some books available in english that deals with this subject, i suggest you to buy and read one before begining to get familiar with terms and tools available in this software.
Thank you very much. Yeah I know quite a bit about typography as I've been doing a course on it in University, so it shouldn't be too hard to work out.

Technically speaking, typography is concerned with the appearance of type on a page or screen, while type design is concerned principally with the form of the letters.

I know, but we've learnt about the letterforms also, just the name of the course is 'Typography'. I created the font for that class actually. I just would like to make it into an actual font file so I can use it easier, rather than having to place the letters individually to write things.
Fontlab, the better program to turn a type design into a font, is quite expensive and has a steep learning curve. Fontcreator is probably better for a novice in this field. It has its limitations but all the basic functions and is far easier to learn and a lot (may I shout LOT?) cheaper.
