usually, sport teams have hand-drawn custom logos, that don't use fonts.
i think it's the case here.
my thoughts about Web 2.0 fonts are a mix of yours...

I'd say some letters are based on Bauhaus Heavy
or maybe Helvetica Thin 35, not an exact match too
maybe a bit small to see p and g
but have a look at Print Clearly. Not exact match anyway.
yeah it could look like Bauhaus Heavy (probably with fake bold applied), but some letters are different :
M, G, E, N, S
i guess if someone found it, you would already know it.
i think something really basic, a Sans Serif font like Arial Unicode (web display, without anti-aliasing)
