I'm looking for big (about 16 pixel height), narrow, thick, plain-looking fixed-width bitmap fonts to use in my code editor.

At the moment, I've only found AtariST:

What format accept your editor FON, TTF, OTF ?

TTF and OTF are fine.

FON: I could convert it.

Being on Linux, BDF and PCF would be fine as well.

However, I'm looking for a bitmap font, therefore the font should be either a FON/BDF/PCF or a TTF/OTF with embedded bitmaps.

Why aren't you using simply Courrier New ?

I gave a look at the Bitmap section, but gave up after many pages of fonts because all of them were small. Apparently, there is no way to filter results according to size. Thank you anyway, Metaphasebrothel.


Courier New is not a bitmap font, AFAIK. Courier (not Courier New) is a bitmap font, but it is not narrow. I find it easier to read fixed-width fonts when they are narrow... I have a weird eyesight, apparently. There are many bitmap fonts that would satisfy my requirements, if it weren't for the narrowness factor. Actually, I would use a proportional font, but I prefer a block-shaped cursor and having it change width -- while moving among text -- feels weird to me.

You said you want a TTF Font.
No TTF font is a real bitmap. Some can LOOK bitmap but all are vectorial.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. By TTF, I meant *.TTF files. My editor accepts fonts contained in *.TTF files. However, I reiterated afterwards that since I'm looking for bitmap fonts, I'm fine only with *.TTF files that embed bitmap fonts (like Anonymous Pro). That's because:

- no matter how much I tune my Linux GUI, vectorial fonts always look blurry and I'd rather have jagged bitmap fonts than blurry vectorial ones in my code editor; for other uses I prefer blurry yet rounded fonts, though, so I can't just disable anti-aliasing and be done with it;

- I could wish to customize some glyphs and since I'm not an aspiring font designer, fixing bitmap fonts comes easier. Hiring a font designer just to fix a comma or an apostrophe seems overkill.

Vectorial fonts that do not embed bitmaps - yet are designed to fit the pixel grid at certain sizes - could do as well, but embedded bitmaps are the preferred way.


I do like their glyphs, however these fonts are not designed to fit the pixel grid, therefore I can't use them. Thank you very much for your research effort, though :-)


Thank your for your suggestion. This is something I could consider with the fonts suggested by Menhir, but I hope I'll find something already available. After all, mine is not a necessity. I'm already fine with the AtariST font in the above screenshot, but I'd like to know about available alternatives.

In 2000 a guy named Pete made the Beeb Mode Zero.ttf - the bbc micro font.Should be somewhere out there in the wild.
