I have been trying to download this font - only the bold version gets downloaded - why?

Well, there's only one version of Sketch Block, so... Are you sure "bold" isn't turned on in the software you're using ?

Yep I'm sure - the bold version is the one that's downloaded - it says Bold in the download file before I even install it.

Ok, I thought it only "looked" bold. Anyway, the style is indeed "Bold", but still, it's the only Sketch Block available here.

- and on the dafont page it says bold + light

The download version is not the same as the one on the website - that's what I mean.

I see. In fact, it's the preview image from the author that says that there are two versions of this font. Actually, only one can be found here. The Light version can be bought here though, if it's needed : http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/artill-typs/sketch-block/
