Struggle for a big font

Jul 07, 2022 at 02:28

Hello everybody,

I am a user of Windows 10 aged more than 60.

The people who are in the same case know the problem this is, but for the others I am going to give some precisions.

To aim using a system font with a decent size to see the task-bar, you have to use Winaero Tweaker to select one, but this is if you have one. And WinAero Tweaker manages three fonts, and it lets you choose a size for the menu font, the message font, but not for the system font, that mainly displays the task-bar, the start menu, and their context menus (some of them at least, as several context menus exist with different fonts).

There, Windows searches in the system font for size 2, and only if it does not find it, it makes an effort to display in size 10.

But my problem is, under size 22 I see nothing at all (and this is for the moment being, I am afraid next year I shall need size 35).

Most of the fonts would do the trick, supposing you suppress four or five lines at the top, those with the more little sizes.
For instance, the Amiri Quran font displays the letters in the good size, allas the figures are how they were before.
Imagine a message like "The battery is charged at ..%"

I searched how to do that modification with FontForge, but maybe I did not search long enough.

There is another approach :
. select the whole font
. Element / Transformations / Transform
. in the actions drop-down list choose "uniform scaling", and then provide a ratio above 100%.

I tried 500%, but it ended by an error, as the results would be truncated.

If a glyph must not exceed the surface in which it is displayed, I imagine you cannot exceed around 120% of ratio, which will not give something readable.

Supposing my problem is clearly asked, otherwise somebody will surely tell me (including if I do not choose the correct word), is anybody able to provide useful guidance?

Did you try to enlarge the characters of a glyph? If you did, did you check if the font's vertical metrics is correct?

I just tried to find a font that I can see.
Unfortunately it had little figures, so I only see letters.

Of course, but that could perhaps help in Windows XP.
