My regrets..perhaps this has been answered. How do I easily determine the fonts which are free?

All fonts on this site are free. However, there is a limitation on the free use of some fonts.

Absolutely free fonts are those tagged as public domain. You can also lump into this the fonts that were released under the GPL/OFL license. You are free to use the fonts under this license for commercial purposes but read the license included in the downloaded archive.

100% Free fonts are widely considered as such also but it is best to get in touch with the font author/publisher if you are going to use the font for non-personal and/or commercial purposes. You are in a way showing love to the font author by acknowledging his/her work. Note that it is possible that an author may ask for a license fee for commercial use.

Free for personal use fonts is limited to private, non-commercial uses. You must get in touch with the font author to get a license for the use of the font for commercial purposes and even for your personal website. A donation does not necessarily mean that you have the right to use the font for commercial purposes. Inquire from the font author first.

Donationware and shareware fonts requires a payment if you wish to continue using the font. How much? The author usually has a text file included in the pack you download that details his/her conditions.

Demo are usually free for personal use fonts that have very limited character set. If you want to use them for commercial uses, you can purchase the commercial version of the font available at other font vendors. A link to where you can get the commercial version is usually indicated in the font description or in a text file included in the archive that you download.

Unknown are old fonts that were uploaded to Dafont decades ago that did not yet have a license. This are usually considered 100% free fonts but better check if there is a way to contact the author before using the font for commercial purposes.


If you want to limit your searches for fonts under a specific license, click on the right most site display settings option - more options - and put a check on the license that you only want to be shown. Fonts under other licenses won't be displayed.
