I have saved a ton of dingbats and fonts over the years. I would like to create a .png (or .bmp) Character Map similar to dafont.com's Character Map for each font. I have tried many different font managers (both free and costly) over the past couple of days and I am amazed at how differently they each interpret the ideal character map and save method. (Ideal, I'm certain varies greatly from user to user as well.)
My ideal is:
generate .png file with visibly assigned keyboard letters and unicode
enlarge size of fonts to discern details (so, save character map at 48pt to 64pt because detail often gets lost on dingbats at 12pt, etc.)
generate character map without installing fonts or with temporary installation of font
Thus far, dp4FontViewer64 comes the closest to my ideal. Its primary shortcoming is that it will only save the visible part of the character map, much like saving a screenshot... not the entire character map.
Font Expert is cool in that it will transport a vector to another application, but its character map saving method isn't even in the ballgame.
I will happily pay $50, but for the right program, a $100 isn't out of the question.
If I haven't supplied you with enough information, please advise me and I will do my best to clarify my thoughts.
I fervently hope someone with more experience can assist me with this unexpectedly awful endeavor.
P.S. I have read a good many Font Manager Reviews, but my specific needs aren't usually addressed, which means installing, testing, and uninstalling each application. After about 10, I came here, hoping someone knows just the right program for my specific needs. (fingers and toes crossed!

What about Arial Unicode and CJK fonts that contain over 30000 characters? Do you really want a single .png file for each font?
Maybe a PDF is more suitable. MainType allows you to print PDF documents with character maps, if you have a PDF printer driver installed as well.

Try Typograf. An oldie, but has an option to print the charmap:
http://www.neuber.com/typograph/ It doesn't come even close to MainType, as it only allows one page per font.
True, but also Typograf does print to PDF (as any program) and cost less than the $50 limit. That said, for $30 more at $79 (now) the MainType Pro works great. With a limited character height but Ultra Large may do the job. Does, however, not print the unicode but the glyph index.
Maybe first try the Standard edition and upgrade when needed?
Whatever, none will save the whole character map to an image, whichever format.
