I think it was a custom made font by James Modarelli - back in 1958. Typophile's site is down right now, so I can't verify.

Meanwhile, this has been on DaFont a few times... here's one I chuckled over... got to love the Kat

Yes, hand lettered by him without a close match to a font.
The reference to Kat's comparison is entertaining.
I tried to find a match but the closest I was able come was Priamos Heavy.
As can be seen from my comparison of the logo -- red line -- with Priamos Heavy -- black -- the fit is mainly in the weight. Everything else is different.
