Does a logo count as commercial use ?

Oct 02, 2014 at 13:04

Hello,

I decided that I wanted to make a simple font logo to put on my photos for my blog, however I'm not sure if this counts as commercial use or not.
I don't sell anything and my blog is kind of a "fun" blog, I write articles about things that I find interesting or random things I've purchased.
I don't make any money with it whatsoever, I am guessing it's non commercial use but I wanted to be sure before making a logo.

Does anyone know more about this?

Hi Melon,
Better to contact directly the author for sure!
Peace

Thank you
I'll contact the authors if I find a nice font

Melon, you don't have to actually make money to be a 'commercial use'. That's a misnomer a lot of people have. If you're redistributing to the public at large, it's commercial. So if it's more than for friends and family, you'll want to check in with the font producer to see if it's kosher to use it. Really, though, most fonts you'll find on this site are more than affordable - give up a little coin and save yourself hassle.

Geez, where I come from, only a pet aQ would charge money for a watermark on a blog photo.

@melonpan Go over my fonts and see if there is anything there that you want to use for the logo as you intended to use it. If you find anything there that you like, email me. My email address in in the font and on the text file that comes with the font. You can also send me a private message here at Dafont.

I will not ask an upfront fee from you. But I will ask a royalty on page view basis. You will have to pay me a specified amount, that is agreeable to both of us, for every thousand page views of all the pages with your logo that used my font. My current rate is $0 per thousand page views. If you are agreeable with my terms, email me so that we can sign an agreement.

This conditions only apply to the use of my font as you describe in the first message of this thread.

A thousand times a thousand views at $0 per thousand makes a total of ... $0. Might as well make it free

You can say that it is free but I would rather not.

I see.

Meta, I was only trying to explain the point of 'commercial use' not necessarily meaning 'cash exchanged'. A lot of people don't understand that distinction - and it CAN bite some people on the ass if they cross the line with a particularly nasty resource creator. Generally speaking, I wouldn't care about such use - but I admit when I see my fonts used HEAVILY for similar purposes on sites where guys sell pictures... I get a little irked.

@koeiekat I keep away from the word "free" because it is taken nowadays as public domain. You can say that it is the synonym of public domain when speaking of fonts.

I am not aware of the transaction that came with the use of this 100% Free font here at Dafont. I came to know about this from the website of someone who used to hang around ABF. I wonder if this organization asked permission to use and modify this font. The font was posted here in 2012 and the modified font was used by the organization this year. I hope that organization, at least, gave the designer/author the courtesy of asking permission to use and modify the font but that "100% Free" tag can be misconstrued as public domain - use the font as you please.

Oh, I wasn't replying to your post, Neale. melonpan said he writes a 'fun blog' and doesn't sell anything. We don't even know which font(s) he'd like to use. I just think it would be crass for anyone to consider that to be commercial use of a FFPU font.

@Jaynz Thanks for the explanation! I really thought that commercial meant "making money with-"

@Toto@k22 I appreciate your offer, unfortunately there isn't any font I'd like to use

@Meta When it comes to the font I was thinking about either something minimalistic or something like this one http://www.dafont.com/angel-tears.font
