I have no idea how to...

I use Google Chrome (but it also does this with Internet Explorer) and when I find a font, I just click download. Every single time it downloads into a Word document that will not open. I've tried looking through my settings on my computer, but nothing seems to work.

Whenever I try to install a font, it installs it under Word, and now I can't use any of the fonts. I can't open them, and they don't appear in Gimp. Please help.
