How come some fonts that I download only show up as question mark symbols when I install them onto my computer? It seems like all the fonts I really want to use don't actually work, and I'm wondering if there's simply something I'm not doing correctly. I hope someone is able to help.

Depending on the software you use, if you type letters that are not part of a font, you will see those letters in a fallback font or you will see a special glyph (.notdef) that comes with the font. You can use a font manager to inspect what characters and glyphs reside in a font.
If you want to test OpenType layout features then you have to use an advanced font manager like MainType.
