Making fonts

27/03/2014 alle 23:20

I want to make a font, and I was wondering if there is any templates in photoshop to make one. I'm pretty good with photoshop and don't really want to learn a new program.

Better work directly in the font program or at least in Illustrator (or any vector editing program)

Is there any template? I really don't want to learn illustrator, I have fontcreator 7.5, but its kind of annoying and confusing

datusername, you need a font editor to make a font. Image and/or vector editors can be used to create individual character shapes, not the actual font.

I understand that. I was wondering in Photoshop there could be template that shows the base line, etc. Then I could upload the picture in a font program

Of course not. Are you capable of understanding things?

Edit
And you can not upload a picture in a font editor. You can only open/import an image - be it a vector or a bitmap - in a font editor, what and how depending on the editor of choice.
Who sang it again ... when will they ever learn ...

Not true. The font editing program i have (fontcreator 7.5) allows you to import photos. I understand everything your saying but there has to be a way to do so.

29/03/2014 alle 20:50

Indeed!! Import. Not upload!

When you are feeding yourself are you uploading fastfood or bringing - importing - fastfood to your body? Font creator allows you to import, not upload. That is if you understand the tiny little difference between upload and import.

Font creator always sets an imported image at the baseline. So what are you muttering about? The only thing you have to do - and indeed that is no easy, if not to say difficult - is to position the rounded characters like O o and the lot correctly below the baseline so that the do not optically float. All this is known as basic knowledge before one starts making a font. So may I suggest that you try to understand this basic knowledge before asking questions. So that the questions were not needed in the first place.

datusername, you'll need to make your images monochrome, (ie: just black and white), before you can import them into a font editor. Your photographs probably contain many colours, You can use photoshop to turn your colour images to black and white before importing them into your font editor, but that's only the first step - those imported images will be rough around the edges; you'll need to smooth them out, or your font will look like shit.

If you're designing the art file in photoshop:
1. Design font in Photoshop with a transparent background
2. Open .psd file in illustrator
3. Live trace '1 color logo' adjust settings according
4. 'Expand' art file
5. Ungroup art file
6. Create a bounding box around each letter
7. Copy and paste each letter + bounding box into font (to maintain size proportions)
8. Delete bounding box in font editing program
9. Adjust kerning
10. Export font
