Self intersecting problems.

I'm working on a custom font with icons mixed in with letters I have been working with it as a otf font file.
in particular now I am trying to make a symbol within an outer square outline, imagine it as if it was the copyright symbol.
I'm using font forge but creating svg files in illustrator.
The problem seems to be in the outer outline that I have made. when I try to generate the font I get a message that there is an error in the glyph, which it describes as self intersecting.
to create the outline in illustrator I create the box and then create a copy, scale it down and subtract it from the original.
I have also tried to trace the outline with the pen tool and assign the desired weight but I still get the same error.
So does anyone have any idea of the correct way i should make the outer outline?
