Wikipedia electoral college maps

12/12/2020 a las 22:39

These maps have become standard on Wikipedia/Wikimedia commons for US presidential elections. I found the very original one (which was first used for the 1992 election), but the author didn't put any note in it about fonts. Thanks in advance!

This looks like a 1988 election map.

[Sorry, no luck finding the font.]

Maybe I should've been more specific with my words—the original one was from 1992, but I used the 1988 one because that's what was on my screen when I thought to start a topic here, haha. Not that bringing up the 1992 map was relevant to begin with, I'm just pedantic, LOL. No problem, thanks for looking.

Do you have any other examples using the same typeface?

None that I know of besides all of the other electoral map images displayed on the pages for each presidential election, sorry.

Also, there's a Wikipedia article that goes over their typography. It might be Veranda like I said above, or one of the other fonts listed here.

It's not Verdana, although it's pretty close. I'll look at that site, and if I can't find it, then I'll settle for Verdana—thanks!

It's an open source alternative to Verdana:

Bingo! Thank you UT, and all of the others who tried as well.

It's curious. If you download the svg file and open it with a text editor you can see

<g id="text" font-family="Helvetica Neue" font-weight="bold">

but clearly it's not Helvetica Neue

I'm not sure what's up with that. In fact, when I open the svg in my browser (Chrome), the text turns into Times New Roman.

Hey guys. This is internet, rendered in your browser.
If you don't own the font specified in the HTML/CSS, you browser will use the closest font.
Usually, when someone requires Helvetica Neue, the second specified choice should be "Sans Serif".
Apparently no one specified a second choice. That's why on Windows it turns to Times New Roman, which is the default font
