why is spacing poor at some pt sizes?

The 30,36,48,60,72 pt sold by Letraset.

Depends on the version. Look at the properties, Hinting/Font Smoothing. What do you see? Something like:

Range in.............Behaviour
Points
0 - 6....................Smoothed
7 - 13..................Hinted
14+.....................Hinted and Smoothed

For the moment, since I am not skilled at hinting, to say the least, I am very happy to have discovered these autohinting utilities: http://www.freetype.org/ttfautohint/ and http://www.fontsquirrel.com/tools/webfont-generator .
