Somewhat more digging revealed that Handwriting was 'created' (how do I dare use the word in this context?) 2008? by Sam Wang, a notorious cloner of existing fonts:

Be careful out there, there are several different fonts named Handwriting.
The name of the font in your sample is actually 'Handwriting'. It is very - if not extremely - similar to WSI's HandScript so they can easily be seen as the same but your sample has the b and r from Handwriting.
The font Handwriting has no information whatsoever about the creator, copyright or trademark.
WSI's HandScript was copied and renamed to GE HandyScript in 1999 by Graphx Edge.
