Some fonts crashing Windows Explorer

09.07.2010 um 20:38

Firstly, many thanks for all the time, effort and probably $ you've invested in this website. What a great resource!

I've read the FAQ, but don't seem to find reference anywhere to this issue:

When I try to copy & paste the ttf file into the Windows Fonts directory, it crashes the Windows Explorer program. At that point I have to reboot it to either try installing the font again or just to get back to looking @ my files.

It doesn't happen with installation of all the fonts, just a few, seemingly @ random. Any idea why this is happening? I have tons of RAM (I do a lot of digital photo editing) and very fast processor, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Other relevant info:

I'm running Windows Vista Business & Word 2007. Currently I only have about 430 fonts in the Win Font directory, most of which came with Word. My browser is the latest version of Firefox.

Thanx for any assistance,

Does this happen with 'older' fonts only or also with 'newer' fonts?
Older meaning fonts made before say 2000. If so, the problem may be in the naming section of the font. Quite some older fonts - specially the freebees - don't have the unique font identifier included, which was 'fine' up to Win98 but XP already had problems with those and Vista is even more critical about this.

Sorry, but I don't know where to look on the files for that information. When I dl them there is no information as to a date when they were created. And obviously the date stamp that winds up on my system is when I dl'd them, not when they were originally created.

However, I did just find the aforementioned problem with: Gravitate, & Magenta & one I think is called "Newpapiiri<sp?>". Is that helpful at all?

Thanx
