Help with FontForge: Kerning values disappearing when font is generated

16.06.2015 um 19:03

So I'm an amateur font designer, using FontForge. I've designed a font with a full set of glyphs and spent countless hours on kerning to make it lovely. Now I have generated the font file, and the kerning info seems to be lost altogether. If I type in Inkscape (a vector image application), no kerning happens at all. If I type in OpenOffice Writer, the application automatically shoves the characters way too close together. The larger the point size, the more condensed it is; it's annoying at 12pt, but unreadable at 24pt and above. I am guessing that the kerning values I did in FontForge are not in the font at all (which explains why they are not present in Inkscape), and maybe OpenOffice is trying to compensate by doing a really bad job at auto-kerning.

A downside of using FontForge is that I can't seem to find any kind of help community for amateurs to figure things out. There's just a Github site for submitting "issues," which are mainly bug reports and feature requests. I'm hoping there are other designers in this community who use FontForge and can help with this issue. Thank you!

I thought I'd add some additional details:

* All my kerning data is in a subtable in a horizontal-kerning GPOS lookup. (I also have a GPOS lookup and subtable for anchors for adding diacritic marks to glyphs. I mention this only because the accented glyphs are working fine, so it's not a total lookup failure.) It's all kerning by pairs, not by classes.

* I'm generating the font with the OpenType format, not TrueType.

If there's any other info needed, just ask.

Hopefully Claude sees this and comes up with a solution. So if/when you see this Caude, you're the one.

I need to see the files .sfd and .otf.

Claude, thanks for your reply. How do I send them to you?

There is good news! I did get *most* of the kerning data to be saved in the .otf by checking the "Windows-compatible 'kern'" box under Options on the "Generate Fonts" dialog box. Yet there are a few idiosyncratic kerning pairs missing. For example, all the pairs involving the glyph i and another lowercase letter are kerned except for the following: ai ia ij in

Hello. I am a noob in this field, and I have a problem with kerning and fontforge too. Can anyone help me?

At first, kerning was all fine. All of the changes I made was reflected in the font I generated.
Then, I went back to add some more kerning. However, this time, some of the kerning wasn't appearing when I tested the generated font.

*I tried my font in Illustrator and MS Word, and neither worked.
*The kerning changes not reflected are (W,O)(W,C) and (W,Q). The other change (O,W) was reflected.
*I was using .otf

Here is the .sfd and .otf

Ohhhhhh. Ok! I think I got it. I thought different tables could be used as "folders", so to say. However, I'm supposed to only have one! Ok. I'll try moving everything to a single table. THANK YOU!!!!!
