New Athletic M54 / Bleacher - which one is right?

Feb 11, 2013 at 09:19

Zerodeluxe, you started this thread to know how deserved to earn some cash for his work. Kate Ferrara came, said she stole from others, and now removed "her" fonts from her site, even from her Facebook page. I think you have your answer

Kate Ferrara kept everything about her stolen fonts in the social medias links at the bottom of he site

btw, we should rename this thread
from "New Athletic M54 / Bleacher - which one is right?"
to "Kate Ferrara - New Athletic M54 / Bleacher - which one is right?"

just for the SEO

Yeah. I know. I just wanted to hear her admit she'd been deceptive.

She said :

This, plus removing everything, that would be enough for me, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, I meant that before today, there were also messages to talk about "her" fonts, and those messages aren't there anymore now. But you're right, there is still some stuff about fonts there

Just found the email from John regarding Slice/MK Stencil:

"Ben,

I've been able to look into the matter, and the sad truth is that Manfred Klein was passing off one of Kate's fonts as his own. Like you said, it's not up on his site anymore, only third part font sites, so she is looking into getting that fixed.

I was provided the original hand drawn sketches of the fonts by Kate, and it looks like Sketch Rockwell is another ripoff. We are working to help resolve that issue as well.

Thanks to you, we will hopefully get the fonts credited properly and take down any copycats.

Thanks,
John Shaver"

Trouble is now, is he in on it...? And can we trust the other deals they have?

I highly doubt that Manfred Klein ever modified someone else' font to make one of his own, considering that he had retired from a long career of type design before computers had mouses. He didn't even need to draw his alphabets on paper. He could just realize them directly from memory or from his imagination in his font editor.

Slice is supposed to have been made in 2012, MK Stencil in 2002.

She said John Shaver is a friend of hers. Why would her friend think she made obvious copies ? Just because he says he has seen sketches - which he should have before 2002, if this was accurate - doesn't mean he's telling the truth.

I'm sorry, zerodeluxe, you'll never have some God ripping the sky and with a loud voice, stating the truth about this. You'll only get two versions. One from her side, and a different one - like from this forum's side, for example. Look at the facts. And make your own opinion about this issue.

Well, as I was nearly duped by the deals, I would like justice.... JUSTICE I TELL YOU!! AAARRRRRGGHHHH!

*falls to knees, throwing fists to the sky*

Did anyone find a match for River or City? I couldn't find any for those...

I don't know how old she is, but Kate Ferrara must have been very young when she did 'Slice' before Manfred Klein did his version

There is a pic on her site. She doesn't appear very old to be honest, but then I'm 37, and don't look much over 21.

*cough*

He lied to you, Ben. MK Stencil is still part of the Manfred Klein 2003 Archive at TypOasis,(http://www.moorstation.org/typoasis/typoasis1.htm) which is still, for the most part, his home site, (his last releases were on his post 2007 home page, http://manfred-klein.ina-mar.com/

Making a remark like this, John Shaver just made it to 'idiot of the year'. And it is only the 11th of February.

Okay, so I got my reply from Kate. Unfortunately it didn't do much to persuade me that this wasn't deliberate. She now claims the similarity with Slice and MK Stencil is 'by chance' (and backtracked on the Klein being the copy claim), as with 'Bleacher/New Athletic' and 'Midwest/Legend' also (There is base work to back up those last ones apparently, but is "backing down" due to Mo's threat of legal action over it, suggesting it's not very convincing - or existent) .... Apparently she's also apologised to the designers of the real versions too. I wonder if the customers will get one?

River, City, Rounder, Quadrant are all still claimed as "hers", but after a bit more searching, 'Archive' on Font Fabric (http://fontfabric.com/archive-free-font/) seems to be the basis for 'Rounder' (check the flat headed ampersand), and 'River' does bear a striking resemblance to House Industries 'United Extended' (http://www.houseind.com/fonts/unitedcollection/viewfonts). Not exact, but enough to raise suspicion.

So there we have it. I don't think she was maliciously deceptive in stealing the fonts, but I'm certainly sure she thought she wouldn't be caught. Thanks for helping me to find the matches and reassure me I wasn't way-off track with my doubts, and hopefully now she won't be doing this again in the future.

Ben

(Oh - and she considers this thread to be getting 'petty'. Fancy linking up all those fonts to other people's work, eh? How childish of us.)

Well, if you still haven't made your mind yet... I don't know what might help you to do so

Feb 13, 2013 at 10:43

Oh... actually, this is 'River'.... exactly, by the looks of it.... http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/sedgwick-co

Feb 13, 2013 at 13:52

Yes. Sedgwick-co is a perfect match.
