Yataghan font appears clipped off
Quote I am trying to use the yataghan font in Microsoft Word 2013 running under windows 7 Enterprise.
The letters in that font are clipped off, that is the top of the letters are missing 10 pixels or so, depending on the font size I choose.
Emailed the author of the font and thus far, no response.
Reading about this topic, I do have a sense that perhaps it is an issue with the ascenders and descenders (sp?) not being set properly?
That's a bit beyond my abilities.
Any suggestion on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

I can not reproduce that problem, ascenders and descenders seem to be set correctly. Can you post a screendump of what is happening?
Sure thing, but how do I do that? the textbox editor does not seem to allow for attachments or inclusion of pictures. Maybe I do not have the right to do that?
It is a Windows issue. That means the font was done on a Mac. Also, the problem does not show in Windows programs that do not rely on the Windows font engine, like Adobe applications.
To fix that, the highest point of the tallest glyph should be used as the ascender value and the lowest point of the glyph with the lowest structure should be used as the descender value. It is assumed that there are nodes in all extrema. You also need a font editor to do this.
The person who made this font should fix this. It would make a mess of his line height plans but those using Windows will surely love him. You can also use a free font editor, FontForge, to fix this for your own use. Claude, a moderator here, knows FontForge very well and might be able to help you. Others here are also familiar with that font editor.

Thank you, toto@k22, I am not familiar with font editing. I am a user of the font and would need far more specific directions, I am afraid, to fix this problem on my own without unwanted side-effects. I do not expect anyone to walk me through these steps; that would be too much to ask. Instead, what I did (I know it is a kludge), I figured out that if I shift the position of the letters down by the size of the font then the problem goes away. Since I am using the font for titles only, this is a workable solution. I have yet to test it when saving the book as pdf or when uploading it to create space. This is why I would love to have this problem taken care of.
I have contacted the author and thus far, no answer. I will keep trying.

egansolo, as there are fundamental differences, which version of the Yataghan are you using? And from where did you download?

That is why I asked Toto. The original ttf version did not have this problem, reason why I wrote that I can't reproduce the problem.

The red dots are nodes that cause problems. The whole font is a bit problematic, 96 of the 246 glyphs have more or less serious errors like incorrect direction and/or intersecting coordinates. Better not use it.

That is better, but the typo descender is still not correct. It is not much but the bottom of the S for example will still be cut of a bit.
And with this new version it is not 96 but 112 glyphs that have problems. Still ... better not use it.

Just tried the new font file: much better. I don't see any of the issues I had before. I still don't know how to insert an image but I am able to scale the font up without an issue. So, yes, it works for what I needed to do: titles for the chapters.

Egan, this Yagathan is an interesting type design. That said, the font is a disaster, the .null and nonmarkingreturn glyphs are missing and almost every glyph has one or more (most times more) problems some serious some not so important like off-curve extreme coordinates. Further, not all glyphs are correctly positioned, compare the A and H where the A must be lowered by 5 em.
In fact the whole font should be redrawn, see below and shiver.

As for the usability of the font.... Setting aside the technical aspect and looking at this in a layman's point of view, if the font serves what you wanted it for and you have not encountered any other issues with it (aside from the one that was fixed), then I think that the font is good enough for you to use.
Does it render well on screen? Does it print perfectly? It is your call whether to use the font or not.
I think it is just a pity that a nice and unique design is not (technically) finished well and can/will cause problems in use. It feeds the Typophile discussions over free fonts are rubbish. While you and I know Toto, that that is not necessarily true.
Indeed, I am in the process of publishing book one of ten of a High Fantasy Epic (should it strike your interest, more info at epicofahiram.com), and, initially, I picked Archeologicap as the font for the title and Adobe Jenson Pro for the body. I was not looking for free fonts, but for fonts that would match the tone of the epic which is a bit like Batman and Frodo meet Ali-Baba. Archeologicap proved too difficult to use whereas Adobe Jenson Pro works perfectly. Now, I know very little about fonts and so I thought Archeologicap was the exception to the rule. Off I went on another hunt and after reviewing 2,500 fonts (without worry about the price), I narrowed it down to two: Ringbearer and Yaghatan. In the end, the team helping me with the publishing process advised against Ringbearer since it is so strongly connected with the Lord of the Rings Movie. Further, the reaction of the 15 members on this team was unanimous: Yaghatan fits just right.
Which brings me to this question: What is the going rate for creating a font? How much would I have to pay to turn Yaghatan into a fail-safe font? Like Toto said, I will be testing this font through the printing process, but I do worry that I will hit a significant snag, and if I can get someone to rework this font for an affordable price, I will consider it.
By the way, the author has yet to answer my request and I do not have any other means to reach him.

This sounds like a no-brainer, but did you try to send e-mail to Daniel at both the account shown in his profile, and the one in the contact information on his blogspot page, (on the right hand side, about mid page?). That one's more likely to be in current use.
I finally managed to connect, and have asked Daniel to check this thread as well since it contains relevant information. Will keep everyone posted.
